Bonded copper is the ideal solution for the burgeoning small cell backhaul network that demands an affordable solution that can be deployed quickly, easily and in high volumes. Genesis’ customers have stated that they will not deploy fiber to small cells but will only consider deploying small cells in areas that already have copper infrastructure that can be re-purposed/shared with other services.
As mobile networks move to 4G LTE and the demand for data bandwidth continues to accelerate, telecommunications operators are finding that the limiting factor in high-density environments is the spectrum itself. To address this issue operators are deploying multiple small cells, to increase frequency re-use and relieve overloaded macro cells which no longer have sufficient capacity and are simply not economically viable.
The end result is the deployment of a large number of small cells, possibly 5x to 10x the number of BTS sites available today. With bandwidth requirements in the 50-200 Mbit/s range, this falls in the sweet spot for bonded copper at a cost point that cannot be matched by other solutions.
Fibre is usually not a cost-efficient way to reach all small cell sites, and the microwave spectrum is congested and isn’t suited for street level and indoor installations.
