TECHNICAL FAQs
Can the software on the Convergence Node be updated remotely?
Yes. Not only can we update the CN software remotely but, due to another benefit of the ring called Efficient Multicast, we can also update all the Home Gateway devices using a minimum amount of bandwidth on the ring.
Can you add and remove ring members remotely?
Yes. This is managed by the telco. They may or may not want to do this, as there may be more than one customer at each premise (e.g.: Utilities need access to their meters at all service locations).
Will the products be environmentally hardened?
Yes. They will meet all necessary outside plant standards for the country of deployment.
How are cross talk problems managed?
The crosstalk on DSL Rings systems is generally less than in other xDSL systems due to the innovative Genesis system architecture. It will limit to around 400 Mb/s the maximum amount of bandwidth that DSL Rings will be capable of supporting. This varies from case to case and link to link and is common with all electrical transmission systems.
What back haul does the solution use?
DSL Rings can support many different types of network backhaul technologies including optical fibre, wireless, and satellite. However, the most common application is likely to be bonded DSL; either G.Bond-based or Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM)-based.
Does DSL Rings technology conform to current regulations?
In most countries DSL Rings conforms to existing regulations. Genesis will work with regulators and other stakeholders in those few countries where DSL Rings technology is inadvertently non-regulatory compliant to enable maximum use of the existing copper phone lines.
Does DSL Rings technology conform to the current ANFP?
The UK’s current ANFP needs to be amended to allow DSL Rings to be deployed. Genesis has joined the NICC – the group who owns the ANFP – to assist in updating the ANFP for DSL Rings deployment. Genesis is also making Openreach and Her Majesty’s Government aware of the capabilities of DSL Rings to solve the Universal Service Commitment of 2Mb/s to every household as well as its capability to be a significant part of the Next Generation Access (NGA) plans going forward.
What frequency range does DSL Rings use?
DSL Rings can support any of the currently specified VDSL2 frequency plans that range from 0 Hz to 8-30 MHz.
